Case Study: Great Wolf Resorts
In 1997, Great Wolf Resorts opened its first location in Wisconsin Dells, WI. Originally named Black Wolf Lodge, the 117-suite resort featured a groundbreaking 20,000-square-foot indoor water park—one of the first of its kind. The concept was an immediate success. Just two years later, the resort expanded to 309 suites, doubling the size of the indoor water park. It was rebranded as Great Wolf Lodge and quickly became a trendsetter in the indoor resort industry.
Combining top-tier accommodations with unforgettable family entertainment under one roof, Great Wolf Lodge set a new standard for family vacations. Following the success of the flagship location, new lodges opened in Traverse City, Michigan, and Sandusky, Ohio.
Building on this momentum, Great Wolf Resorts began expanding nationwide, opening locations in major markets across the U.S. Each resort received high praise from guests and industry experts alike, earning numerous travel awards along the way. Today, Great Wolf Resorts is proud to operate the largest family of indoor water park resorts in North America, with 21 locations and more on the horizon.
Headquartered in the Midwest, the company now has a coast-to-coast presence—from Southern California to New England. The average property value, including land, building, and construction, ranges from $150 to $200 million per location.
And this is just the beginning. With sights set on international growth, Great Wolf Resorts is preparing to expand well beyond its current footprint, including its existing resort in Niagara, Canada. For over 20 years, Great Wolf Lodge has brought joy to millions of families—and with every new location, we’re excited to share our signature brand of family fun with even more guests around the globe.
